My Japanese is so bad, I’ll use English for the sake of more foreigners. The owner is such a nice lady, so kind heart. She introduced basically everything around matsushiro for me. Also, very kindly she drove us to the onsen, and took me to dojo(where samurai sons used to be educated and learn about bujyutsu, how to use katana, bows, etc). We watched sensei practiced katana and tried the wooden swords too. Matsushiro is quiet yet full of history and taste town. Highly recommended for solo travel

This was the highlight of my Golden Week trip to Nagano! Matsushiro GuestHouse Hoteiya is an excellent hostel off the beaten path. It is comfortable, clean, and the staff is quick with a recommendation. Kaoru-San made my stay unforgettable. She is friendly and informative and speaks English well. She directed me to a fabulous onsen nearby, a delicious restaurant where I had amazing sashimi and yakitori, and local sites in the area. I cannot recommend this hostel highly enough. Thank you!

Kaoru was the sweetest host! I stayed at this location for eight nights with my 1 year old daughter & it was the best decision. She was very hospitable & went out of her way every day to help us. She drove me to the local Onsen a few times, drove me to grocery shop & do laundry, & even in to town. We celebrated my daughter’s first birthday there & it was very special. If you want to experience Japanese culture I highly recommend this hostel. She makes you feel so welcome. She felt like family.
